John William Hill working in watercolor, gouache and engraving. His works captured the spirit of mid-century America, as well as its natural beauty. Hill’s work explores both human and animal life while chronicling human society through the history of art. His work, though not digital or figurative in nature, reflects themes of landscape, travel on roads and low-income housing as well as the insularity of city life.
Hill’s has been drawing for most of his life, from the tender age of 3, when he began with crayons and a color-coded chart. At the age of 13, he was reintroduced to watercolor when his mother bought him a package of watercolor paints for Christmas. This particular experience changed how Hill draws; by mixing oils, he can omit one or more steps in painting and quickly get an airbrushed effect without any dripping mistakes. He had his works exhibited at graduate school and recently has been gaining much praise on social media. While a lot of art that is produced today is digital in processing or painted by someone else, Hill makes traditional paintings using oils and ink on paper.
